Salty, Melty Steak

Oh my jeez, tonight I think I made the best steak ever. I was surfing this morning and came across this post about how to turn choice steaks into prime steaks. Basically it is a way to brine beef, using only salt. Take some steaks, cover them with salt, and let them rest for an [...]

A Tomato Soup I Actually Enjoyed

My entire life I have hated tomato soup. Of course my experience was based on the Campbell’s version, which was like drinking a tomato milkshake. So when Blossom suggested that in preparation for the baby’s arrival we should make food in bulk and freeze it I jumped on the chance to find a good tomato [...]

Thanksgiving is over

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday ever. You are just supposed to eat. And give thanks, but I usually give thanks for the fact that I am just supposed to eat. My special lady friend and I went over to Pam and Dave’s house, who recently moved to the village of Maynard. The twins Sam and [...]

Never go against the family

My friend Chuck and I were lamenting some triviality at work the other day and I mentioned my belief that the situation called for heavy drinking to relieve tensions. Chuck suggested that I try mixing up a few godfathers (when I got home of course), because they are delicious. So this weekend I bit the [...]

Chicken jazz

Last Saturday my special lady friend and I went out for dinner and a show. I have cagily kept this basic date an enjoyable activity by rarely engaging in it. Most of our par excellence dining experiences are prepared by me, during which time I am frenetic enough to qualify as a show of [...]

Where’s the kola?

An interesting topic of discussion occurred at work today. The kola nut is used to flavor carbonated soda beverages, resulting in the cola Americans love to guzzle today. But we could not name one other food that uses the kola nut.

I looked on the web (glorious repository of all knowledge) and learned that the kola [...]

Quiet rummy!

A most enjoyable fourth, during which I indulged in another favorite libation: the daiquiri. Not to be confused with the frozen daiquiri as can be seen from The Alchemist’s history:

History credits a gringo with creating the Daiquiri, but we dare to dispute this claim, guessing that Cuban residents enjoyed this cocktail [...]

Independance day pie surgery

My special lady and I are off to celebrate the fourth in scenic Watertown, MA. My contribution to the festivities is an apple pie, which is not in season but the all-americaness dictates it should be served. I was crackerjack in my preparation, and put together a lovely pie in no time flat. After placing [...]

World’s easiest key lime pie

The best pie is rhubarb pie — there can simply be no discussion here. Oh you can whine and moan about how some other pie is better, but you might as well save yourself some angst and just admit you are wrong right now.

The drawback to rhubarb pie is that it takes a reasonable amount [...]

Skaal!

I happen to enjoy cooking, and I also happen to enjoy drinking. Cooking drinks means making cocktails. My personal favorite is the sidecar. One makes a sidecar thusly:

Sidecar

2 parts Cognac
1 part Cointreau
1 part lemon juice

Serve straight up with a sugared rim and a twist.
