The Big News

After a long journey of natural and unnatural efforts Blossom and I are in a family way. A couple of years back we decided that we were ready to enlarge the family, and enthusiastically pursued nature’s course. But alas, all that work was for naught. So we hit the medical scene, and discovered that Blossom has a condition called endometriosis which can contribute to infertility. So we tried a couple of hormones along with l’amour, to no avail. Time to bring on the test tube!

In October we underwent IVF (in vitro fertilization) treatment. Blossom took a bunch of hormone shots to supress then supercharge egg production. Then the doc did a minor procedure to retrieve the eggs, of which there were a lot! I did the necessary, and everything got mixed together in a petrie dish and lo and behold we had 8 embryos. We decided to transfer one embryo and put the rest on ice. When they did they transfer they put the little guy under the microscope and we got to see it clear as day. Here’s Baby’s first picture; a blurry snap from the crappy ultrasound printer.

They rate an embryo on the three dimensions listed in the photo, and naturally ours was top shelf. After the transfer I got to give Blossom more hormone shots — with a big ass needle I might add — every night for 6 weeks. Good times! We waited the month and then found out she was preggers on our first try.

There was much rejoicing and imbibing of strong liquor (by me, for my nerves). In week 6 we got to do an ultrasound to check Baby’s heartbeat.

We are now in week 12, and everything is going swimmingly. Baby is the size of a lime, and Mama is starting to show.
