“Gate” scandals eat it

Why must the media label every scandal as a “gate”? I find it to be the most trite, overused media cliche around, and I am filled with rage every time a new scandal gets labeled. “Memogate” is the latest. My that’s clever.

To me such banal labels imply that the Watergate scandal is the definitive scandal of our times. But if you asked me cold what the biggest name in American scandals was, I would—without hesitation—go for the Teapot Dome scandal. So I propose to the media wags that everything be a “dome” instead of a “gate”. Here’s a list of “gates”, but when you swap in a “dome” they all become possessed of a certain panache. Monicadome, nippledome, contradome, Billydome; man do those sing.
